AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas senior linebacker Trey Moore is in consideration for an award considered to be the “Academic Heisman.”
Moore is a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation announced Wednesday. The Campbell Trophy is a scholar-athlete award given to the college football player who “exemplifies the student-athlete ideal and pursues excellence both on and off the field.”
“Trey checks all the boxes of a tremendous student and athlete and is an absolute joy to coach,” Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian said. “He has a huge impact on the field, is an outstanding leader on and off the field and with the example he sets in his commitment to his schoolwork. Trey is consistently driven to be great in everything he does, and he absolutely epitomizes that mantra every day.”
Moore will graduate in December with a degree in Physical Culture and Sports and a 3.64 cumulative GPA. He was the Longhorns’ academic MVP in Spring 2025 and was a 2024 pick for both the Southeastern Conference academic honor roll and the College Sports Communicators academic all-district team.
On the field, Moore moved to linebacker from the edge rusher position and has 12 tackles with a sack through four games this season. Last year, he had 6.5 sacks with three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries to go with 36 tackles (10.5 for loss).
His community service includes volunteering for the San Antonio Food Bank in his hometown and also Hungry Souls Austin. He also works with Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin and the Down Syndrome Association of Austin.
Longhorns center Jake Majors was a finalist for the award last year. Previous winners from Texas were Dallas Griffin in 2007 and Sam Acho in 2010.
Finalists will be announced Oct. 22. The winner will be announced Dec. 9 in Las Vegas.
