AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas didn’t have to play this week to move up in the Associated Press Top 25 amid chaos across the college football landscape, with four top-10 teams losing in a wild week.
With all the movement around them, the Longhorns were elevated one spot to No. 9. They’ll take on unranked Florida in their Southeastern Conference opener at 2:30 p.m. CT, Saturday.
Penn State, Georgia, Louisiana State and Florida State all lost, and only the Nittany Lions stayed in the top 10. Oregon, previously the No. 6 team in the rankings, beat them 30-24 in overtime and moved up four spots to No. 2. Penn State fell four slots to No. 7. Ohio State remained No. 1 following a 24-6 road win over Washington.
Ole Miss was the poll’s biggest riser, moving up nine spots to No. 4 after a 24-19 win over LSU. The Tigers fell nine slots to No. 13. Alabama rose seven spots to No. 10 with a 24-21 win over Georgia, and the Bulldogs dropped seven places to No. 12.
After losing 46-38 to unranked Virginia, Florida State dropped 10 spots from No. 8 to No. 18.
Texas A&M moved up three spots to No. 6 after hanging on to beat Auburn 16-10, and Indiana rose three spots to No. 8 with a 20-15 win over Iowa. Oklahoma was idle and moved up two spots to No. 5.
Notre Dame moved up one spot to No. 21 after a 56-13 win over Arkansas, which led to Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman being fired with a 32-34 record in five-plus seasons. Bobby Petrino was named the interim head coach.
