Longhorns in the mix for another elite EDGE defender.

Today was a busy day on the recruiting front for Texas. Along with landing one of the best players in the country in Jermaine Bishop, the Longhorns were named finalists for two of the best defenders in the country.

One of those defenders is Princeton (NJ) The Hun School four star EDGE defender Luke Wafle. Wafle announced earlier today via On3’s Steve Wiltfong that he has narrowed his recruitment to a finalist group of Ohio State, Penn State, Texas and USC.

Wafle was recently in Austin for an unofficial visit in April, and the impression that Texas made on him has carried them into his final grouping of schools competing for his commitment.

The school to watch among the finalists will Penn State, with Wafle’s older brother Owen being part of the program in State College, PA. The Nittany Lions will have a very compelling pitch for a budding EDGE rusher prospect given they were just able to produce a top five NFL draft pick in Abdul Carter.

With that said, I wouldn’t sleep on Texas’ chances given the program’s trajectory and their recent run of NFL development successes. They will certainly have a quality sales pitch for Wafle and his family, but they will definitely have to overcome proximity and the familiarity that Penn State has working for them in this recruitment.
