Video shows constable rescue three kids, two women after car plunges into Lake Ray Hubbard

Body camera video released by the Kaufman County Constable’s Office on Thursday shows rescuers pulling three children and two women from a car accidentally driven into Lake Ray Hubbard.

Officials said Tuesday afternoon that a woman was teaching her nanny to drive when the nanny likely mistook the gas pedal for the brake, hopped a curb and then drove through high vegetation and into the lake.

Patrick Johnson, a retired Air Force veteran who lives in the Travis Ranch neighborhood, heard screaming and saw a white Mercedes sedan floating in the water.

“I could see the lady coming through the sunroof, getting on top of the car,” Johnson said. “I did not know that the kids were in there.”

The constable’s office happened to be training nearby and deputies arrived at the scene within minutes of the 911 call.

Body camera video released Thursday showed a constable’s deputy running through the high grass and into the water to pull the children to safety one by one, followed by their mom and nanny.

“They’re the ones that we should thank. They got into the water. They were able to get the kids out of the water and calm them down,” Johnson said.

Once everyone was back on dry ground, the constables gave the children, ages 1, 2 and 4, teddy bears while they were checked out by Forney firefighters.

One of the children had a small cut on her ankle. No other injuries were reported.
