The Texas High School football season is already at Week 4 with some great games going on Thursday and Friday night across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains. Check out how the Press Pass Sports team of Lance Lahnert, Lee Passmore, Craig Sperry and Kale Steed see things working out.
THURSDAY’S GAMES
Class 5A
Odessa Permian (2-1) at Tascosa (2-1), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
Mojo arrives in Amarillo coming off a monster W over a very good Abilene High team. The Rebs looked so-so in the loss at Lubbock Cooper. Not sure Tascosa’s offensive prowess at this time is enough to beat Permian. … Permian 21, Tascosa 14.
Class 4A
Caprock (1-2) at Canyon (2-1), 7 p.m., Happy State Bank Stadium
A couple of former district rivals looking to develop momentum for district play clash at Happy State Bank Stadium. Caprock found some offense in beating Pampa on the road last week to get in the win column and Canyon took a step back offensively in a loss to Palo Duro. Both teams are still looking to establish a positive identity on offense after performing respectably defensively last week. Canyon has been a little more consistent in that regard, which along with home field gives the Eagles the edge. … Canyon 28, Caprock 10.

Class 3A
West Texas High (3-0) at Tulia (2-1), 7 p.m.
Both teams seem to be much improved from a year ago, but the question will be is do the Hornets have what it takes to stay on the field with the Comanches. … WT High 42, Tulia 21.
Class 1A
Booker (2-1) vs. Silverton (0-3), Tigers Stadium, Groom
The Kiowas offense finally found it’s footing last week and they will look to extend that momentum on the same field but against a different opponent. … Booker 68, Silverton 18.
McLean (0-3) vs. Springlake-Earth (1-2), 7 p.m., Mustang Stadium, Claude
This is a fascinating matchup. The Tigers are coming off a heartbreaking loss last week at home via the rare field goal. They found a passing attack last week which gives Springlake-Earth something to think about but the Wolverines finally grabbed a win last week and may have too much firepower to defend. … Springlake-Earth 42, McLean 30.
Wilson (0-3) at Anton (0-3), 7 p.m.
One of these teams walks away with their first victory of the season. Both squads have struggled early but the Bulldogs are the better team. … Anton 44, Wilson 20.
Nazareth (1-2) at Valley (0-3), 7:30 p.m.
Likely the game of the week in this area as Valley is happy to welcome the Swifts into town. That’s not a shot at Nazareth but after having Gordon and Jayton in town in back-to-back weeks this will feel like a fair matchup. Both squads match up well. The key may be the Patriots ability to handle Lincoln Pohlmeier in the passing game. … Nazareth 38, Valley 36.
Kress (3-0) at Paducah (3-0), 7:30 p.m.
There is a common opponent between these two in Wellman-Union. The Kangaroos beat the Wildcats by 22 while the Dragons won last week by 19. That means, on paper, this one should be a close contest but Darren Mackey is the X factor for Paducah. … Paducah 72, Kress 54.
FRIDAY’S GAMES
Class 6A
Lubbock Cooper (2-1) at Frenship (1-2), 7 p.m., Peoples Bank Stadium, Wolfforth
Rivalry deluxe between these two perched on the outskirts of the Lubbock ISD. If Cooper can beat Tascosa, it can beat Frenship. … Cooper 20, Frenship 14.
Class 5A
Palo Duro (2-1) vs. Amarillo High (3-0), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
This is meeting 66 of this historic Amarillo ISD rivalry that first played out in 1955. And, this one has intrigue. Last year PD ended a 17-game losing streak to AHS with a 20-14 victory. This PD team is better than last year when it comes to maturity, discipline and knowing exactly what they want to do scheme wise. AHS on the other hand can flat out crank out points averaging 42.3 points per game against a trio of 6A schools. The Sandies gained state-wide respect this week breaking into the No. 10 slot in Dave Campbell’s 5A-DI rankings. … Amarillo High 38, Palo Duro 28.
Randall (3-0) at Wichita Falls Legacy (1-2), 7 p.m., Memorial Stadium, Wichita Falls
Randall had a tussle last week with Perryton to stay undefeated but got the job done. The Raiders have learned how to win under third-year Coach Dan Sherwood owning a 13-1 record in their last 14 regular season games. Make that 14-1. … Randall 31, Legacy 14.
Odessa High (0-3) at Lubbock Monterey (1-2), 7 p.m., Lowrey Field at Plains Capital Park, Lubbock
Man, Monterey came close last week. Man, Odessa High is a 6A and the three losses are to teams with a combined 8-1 record. Tight one. … Lubbock Monterey 28, Odessa High 24.
Lubbock Coronado (0-3) at Abilene Cooper (1-2), 7 p.m., Shotwell Stadium, Abilene
Cooper continues Coronado’s struggles. … Cooper 44, Coronado 14.
Lubbock High (1-2) at San Angelo Lake View (3-0), 7 p.m., San Angelo Stadium, San Angelo
The Chiefs are off to a surprising 3-0 start but will get a big test in the Westerners. … Lubbock High 30, Lake View 26.
Lance Lahnert
Last week: 4-3 (.571)
Season: 13-6 (.650)
Class 4A
Bushland (1-2) at West Plains (3-0), 7 p.m., Happy State Bank Stadium
Another nondistrict meeting at Happy State Bank between two metros, although both with potent offenses. West Plains is rolling along as expected after a 63-34 win over Lubbock Estacado, although the Wolves showed a vulnerable defense. Bushland’s had a couple of tough losses against quality opponents Canadian and Midland Christian, so the Falcons have something to prove. As prodigiously as the West Plains program has started, the Wolves are 0-3 against Bushland. That’s going to change. … West Plains 38, Bushland 20.
Pampa (0-3) at Borger (0-3), 7 p.m.
One of the most storied and traditionally contentious rivalries in the Texas Panhandle has lost a bit of its luster as these winless teams are struggling. The difference is, Pampa has been competitive in all three losses, as the Harvesters have lost by a combined 13 points. Meanwhile, Borger’s three losses have been by an average score of 47-6. This one will be closer than that. … Pampa 41, Borger 22.
Hereford (1-2) at Perryton (1-2), 7 p.m.
The records of these teams are probably a bit misleading, as they’ve had tough schedules and in Hereford’s case, close games which could have gone either way. This promises to be an entertaining offensive game as a showdown between two top quarterbacks, Hereford’s Kalub Ramirez and Perryton’s Cooper Schilling. Hereford has the edge as far as depth, so look for the Whitefaces to pull off a hard-fought road win over the Rangers. … Hereford 34, Perryton 24.
Plainview (2-1) at Dumas (2-1), 7 p.m.
This is yet another promising matchup between two stellar quarterbacks, Colton Mills of Dumas and Plainview’s Seth Mayberry, so expect a lot of points here. The difference will be the supporting casts, as Dumas has a better defense and Mills more weapons he can use. Dumas also has some motivation after losing a tough one at Canadian, so that and home field advantage will be more than enough to carry the Demons to a comfortable victory. … Dumas 41, Plainview 26.
Seminole (2-1) at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty (3-0), 7 p.m.
One of the more intriguing matchups occurs between second-year program Liberty just south of Lubbock and Seminole, in another game which should test scoreboard operators. Liberty has coasted through three games but Seminole should provide a stiff test as the Indians have been rolling since a season-opening loss at West Plains. The Patriots are home, so this should provide the slightest of advantages. … Liberty 28, Seminole 27.
Lubbock Estacado (1-2) at Sweetwater (1-2), 7 p.m.
Records are again a big misleading, as Estacado hung up 34 in a loss to West Plains and Class 3A Sweetwater has played bigger schools the past two weeks. Estacado running back James Boseman and wide receiver Cedric Ross are dangerous weapons, and the ability of the Matadors to run and pass effectively will be the difference in determining the victor in what should be an entertaining game. … Estacado 35, Sweetwater 20.
Lee Passmore
Last week: 4-2 (.667)
Season: 15-5 (.750)
Class 3A
Midland Greenwood (3-0) at Shallowater (3-0), 7 p.m.
What a matchup at Todd Field on Friday night between a battle of unbeatens. The Mustangs can hang but the Rangers are the real deal. … Greenwood 39, Shallowater 26.
Dalhart (2-1) at Friona (1-2), 7 p.m.
The Golden Wolves are taking a lot of confidence to Chieftain land after a big win over Panhandle last week. … Dalhart 38, Friona 19.
New Home (2-1) at Denver City (1-2), 7 p.m.
The Leopards are getting better by the week and look like a team starting to gel. … New Home 35, Denver City 20.
Morton (0-2) at Dimmitt (2-1), 7 p.m.
Dimmitt head coach Jimmy Arias has Bobcats playing good football during the early portion of the schedule. … Dimmitt 35, Morton 16.
Canadian (3-0) at Muleshoe (1-2), 7 p.m.
These two teams combined for 141 points in a wild 74-67 Canadian win a year ago. Who knows what to expect this time around. It will be interesting to see Muleshoe head coach Bo Dickinson go up against his Alma mater. … Canadian 45, Muleshoe 20.
Idalou (1-2) at Odessa Compass (3-0), 7 p.m.
The Wildcats head down to the Permian Basin looking to hand the Cougars their first L of 2025. … Idalou 27, Compass 21.
Kale Steed
Last Week: 5-4 (.555)
Overall: 20-5 (.800)
Class 2A
Childress (2-1) vs. Sunray (0-3), 7 p.m., Comanches Stadium, Stinnett
In this battle of Bobcats, Childress has seem to hit a stride after season-opening loss while Sunray is still a young team trying to find its way. Also, tip of the cap to West Texas High for letting Sunray host this game after a devasting storm hit the community back in August … Childress 35, Sunray 14.
River Road (1-1) at Panhandle (2-1), 7 p.m.
The Panthers may take out some aggression after a shocking loss last week at Dalhart. … Panhandle 48, River Road 12.
Highland Park (1-2) at Memphis (2-1), 7 p.m.
On paper, this is about an even matchup as one can find. There is a good battle here with a talented Hornet offense going against an aggressive Cyclone defense. … Memphis 20, Highland Park 18.
Sanford-Fritch (2-1) at Shamrock (0-3), 7 p.m.
The Eagles use their physicality to bounce back against a young Irish squad. … Fritch 35, Shamrock 13.
Texhoma, Okla. (1-1) at Spearman (1-2), 7 p.m.
Look for the Lynx to have a big night on the ground and come away with another W. … Spearman 34, Texhoma 22.
Farwell (2-0) at Abernathy (1-2), 7 p.m.
This is one of the better Week 4 matchups on the South Plains. The Steers get their toughest test while the Antelopes are trying to refocus. … Farwell 27, Abernathy 26.
Sundown (1-2) at New Deal (1-1), 7 p.m.
I like the Lions to roar and defend the home turf. … New Deal 28, Sundown 13.
Texico, N.M. (1-2) at Stratford (2-1), 7 p.m.
It will be a quick night of work for the Elks. … Stratford 49, Texico 14.
Clarendon (0-3) at Gruver (2-1), 7 p.m.
The Greyhounds will begin a new win streak taking on a rebuilding Broncos team. … Gruver 45, Clarendon 8.
Sudan (2-1) at Vega (2-1), 7 p.m.
The Longhorns will hang around till the Hornets pull away in the second half. … Sudan 34, Vega 20.
Seagraves (1-1) at Bovina (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Eagles come into Bovina wanting to spoil a big night for the home crowd. … Seagraves 35, Bovina 21.
Smyer (1-2) at Hale Center (2-1), 7 p.m.
The Owls defense had quite the showing at Wheeler last week. I’m thinking we see a strong performance on both sides against the Bobcats. … Hale Center 48, Smyer 7.
Wellington (3-0) at Lubbock Christian (3-0), 7 p.m.
This has become a great non-district rivalry over the past few years. The Eagles knocked off a very good Stanford team last week. The Skyrockets are wanting to prove they are for real. … Lubbock Christian 28, Wellington 22.
Kale Steed
Last Week: 6-3 (.666)
Overall: 24-10 (.705)
Class 1A
Boys Ranch (3-0) at San Jacinto Christian Academy (2-1), 7 p.m., Rick Klein Park
Another intriguing matchup on the card. The Roughriders have won three straight with a high-flying offense and the Patriots are coming off their first loss but still playing good ball. To beat Boys Ranch, you have to get some stops and San Jacinto will get just enough for the win. … San Jacinto Christian Academy 72, Boys Ranch 58.
Claude (2-1) at Groom (1-2), 7 p.m.
It’s been a tough year for the Tigers and Claude won’t make it easier. The Mustangs have a solid ground game and an impressive linebacking corps that won’t let Groom get much accomplished on offense. … Claude 62, Groom 20.
Amarillo FFC (1-2) at Follett (0-3), 7 p.m.
After playing Benjamin and Whiteface in consecutive weeks the Panthers will be looking to hand out some punishment to the Lions. This one will be over early. … Follett 56, Amarillo FFC 6.
Hedley (0-2) at Lefors (2-1), 7 p.m.
Look for the Pirates offense to click on all cylinders in this one as they take down the Owls. … Lefors 60, Hedley 13.
White Deer (3-0) at Miami (3-0), 7 p.m.
It’s been a great start to the season for both clubs and now someone is going to register their first loss of the season. Can the Bucks defense shut down the solid rushing attack of the Warriors? If they can they will have a shot but Miami’s experience in big games will be the difference in this one. … Miami 46, White Deer 32.
Roby (2-1) at Petersburg (0-3), 7:30 p.m.
The Lions are looking to take down their second opponent out of District 5-1A after they beat Lorenzo by nine to start the season. Unfortunately, the Buffaloes just aren’t on the same level as Roby right now. … Roby 54, Petersburg 20.
Happy (0-3) at Whitharral (3-0), 7:30 p.m.
One more week with a top ten team across the field from the Cowboys before the schedule eases up. The Panthers bring a load of speed with Greg Johnson at the defense and that’s not something Happy can contend with. … Whitharral 60, Happy 8.
Hart (2-0) at Wildorado (0-3), 7:30 p.m.
Last year the Mustangs won this game 52-7 and the score this year is likely to be the same except it will be the Longhorns on the winning end this time around. … Hart 52, Wildorado 7.
