West Plains holds off Canyon

West Plains was able to defend its homecourt and lock up second place in District 4-4A with a hard fought 47-40 win against CISD rival Canyon on Tuesday night.

The Wolves improve to 19-11 overall but more importantly 10-2 in district play. Canyon falls to 15-14 on the year and 6-6 in district a game back of Pampa for the final playoff spot with two games remaining.

Leading 25-22 at half, West Plains was able to stretch that lead in the third going up 39-32 and never looking back.

Post player Ethan Gilliam was clutch inside for the Wolves scoring a team-high 18 points. Guard Reid Macon followed with 14. The Eagles were led by Jordan Webber’s 16.

Tuesday’s top performers

Holy Cross Catholic Academy standout Willy Atak was flat out unstoppable in a Mustangs 87-50 thumping of Christ the King Atak set a school-record with a eye-popping 50 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists.

Valley’s Kanyon Taylor and Evan Meyer combined for 52 points to help the Patriots down Guthrie 85-38. Taylor had a game-high 27 going 6-of-9 from beyond the arc to go with 11 rebounds and 11 blocks for a triple-double. Meyer complimented that effort going 4-of-6 from downtown.

Dalton Booth and Bryce Lynn had huge efforts that helped Pampa escape with a thrilling 64-62 double overtime win against Dumas on Tuesday night. Booth and Lynn both finished with 18 points.

Randall secured at least a share of the District 4-4A championship hustling past Hereford 90-78. Jaxon Toniolli poured in a team-high 27 points followed by Tayesen Combs 26 points. Despite the loss, Hereford’s Tyi Duque had a game-high 30.

Amarillo High cruised by Lubbock-Cooper 42-23 to claim the outright District 3-5A title. Zach Brown was in control of that effort for the Sandies tallying a team-high 19 points.

Victor Juarez was on fire leading Palo Duro to a 72-68 win. Juarez blitzed the Plainsman for 29 points knocking down a game-high five 3-pointers.

Spearman’s Hector Diaz celebrated a special milestone during the Lynx 65-40 victory against Sunray. Diaz posted a game-high 23 to go over 1,000 points for his career.

Groom handed McLean its first District 2-1A loss getting a huge 53-50 home win. Bryson Shuck did the damage for Groom scoring 20 points. Teammate Davis Babcock chipped in with 19.
