AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin FC advanced to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday at Q2 Stadium.

It’s the deepest the club has ever been in the tournament, and they’ll find out who and where they’ll play after Thursday morning’s draw.

Verde and Black jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Dynamo got on the board with 20 minutes left. Brandon Vasquez continued his hot streak with his fifth goal in five matches across all competitions, slamming a pass from Jon Gallagher into the net 29 minutes in. Osman Bukari converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute and Ilie Sanchez capped the scoring after he was left all alone following a Bukari pass to score in the 60th minute.

Houston outshot Austin 20-10, but Austin was more efficient with its shooting, holding a 6-3 edge in shots on target.

Austin defender Julio Cascante was sent off with a red card in the third minute of second-half stoppage time, two minutes after Houston’s Brooklyn Raines was shown a red card and booted from the match.

Austin is back in MLS play at Minnesota on Saturday.
