AUSTIN (KXAN) — Freshmen Cole Chamberlain and Adrian Rodriguez hit home runs as the current Texas Longhorns squad topped the alumni team 6-3 Saturday at UFCU-Disch Falk Field.
Chamberlain’s 2-run blast came on a 3-1 pitch in the second inning, ripping a low fastball over the right-center field wall just below the video board. Rodriguez’s dinger was also of the 2-run variety, an opposite-field line drive over the left field wall in the fifth inning.
The current Texas pitching staff pitched for both teams, but former Longhorns ace pitcher Pete Hansen was in town for the game to see old friends before he heads to Jupiter, Florida for the St. Louis Cardinals’ spring training in a couple of weeks. He likes what he sees from the new coaching staff and program.
“They’re doing a good job with player development and making that a point of emphasis this year,” he said. “I still talk to some of the guys in the program and I know they’re enjoying it.”
Hansen pitched in Austin for three seasons with his best in 2022. He finished 11-3 with a 3.76 ERA and 120 strikeouts against 19 walked in 107 2/3 innings. He was drafted in the third round of the 2022 MLB draft by the Cardinals with the 97th overall pick.
Dylan Campbell, the program’s hitting streak record holder at 38 games, was also in town but sporting a different jersey than last season. The Los Angeles Dodgers traded him to the Philadelphia Phillies in the offseason for international bonus pool money, and the defending World Series champs used it to sign Japanese sensation Roki Sasaki.
“I get a new opportunity with a new organization,” he said of the trade. “I’m looking at it as a positive thing, and I’m going to go to spring training with the same mindset as I did with the Dodgers and everything will be all right.”
The Dodgers drafted Campbell at No. 136 overall in the 2023 draft.
Texas officially gets the 2025 season going Feb. 14 at the Shriners Children’s College Showdown against Louisville at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
