Texas put the league on notice in its inaugural year
Last week, the Southeastern Conference announced that the Texas Longhorns are the latest winners of the league’s annual All-Sports Trophy, which is given to the league’s most successful athletics program each year. Texas joined the SEC in July of last year.
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte has a lot to pat himself on the back for since the school made the decision to move its athletic programs to the SEC several years back.
Since the official move, that includes SEC championships in men’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, women’s swimming and diving and soccer. Texas’ football program also competed against, but lost it, Georgia during the league’s 2024 football championship.
However, it was Texas softball’s third-place finish in the SEC Tournament that made the difference in Texas officially clinching this year’s award. Tennessee finished a moderately close second-place, while Texas A&M finished third and South Carolina finished fourth.
A 3rd place regular season finish by @TexasSoftball means that the @TexasLonghorns have now mathematically clinched the SEC All Sports Trophy.
Worst possible finishes by Texas and 1st place finishes by Tenn would not be enough for the Volunteers to overcome the Longhorns. pic.twitter.com/P7H1wWXWbe
