AUSTIN (KXAN) — St. Micheal’s claimed the TAPPS 6A boys basketball championship Saturday on a last-second bucket by junior Bo Ogden.

Tied 48-48 with Dallas Parish Episcopal and 5.8 seconds remaining, Ogden banked home a highly-contested floater as time ticked off the clock, lifting the Warriors to a 50-48 win at Robinson High School in Waco. It’s the program’s first state championship since 2003, but the team has been in the TAPPS semifinals four times in the past five seasons.

The Warriors led by as much as 22 points in the first half, head coach Cooper Land said, but Parish stormed back to take a 4-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Warriors didn’t panic, however, and relied on the experience from their tough nonconference schedule to help them defeat the defending TAPPS 6A champs. It was Parish’s first loss to a Texas team in over a year.

“We played one of the best teams in the country in our first game, Dynamic Prep, and it was close at halftime but then we lost by 30,” senior guard Shug Jinkal said. “That kind of set the tone for the entire season, and we won some big games throughout the season.”

St. Michael’s beat UIL playoff teams Stony Point, Summer Creek, Bowie, Weiss and Lake Travis to help build a 32-4 record. The Warriors are No. 25 in the latest USA Today Super 25 national rankings.

Jinkal will play college hoops close to home at St. Edward’s University in Austin. Aiden Disu, younger brother of former Texas Longhorn star Dylan Disu, will play at Holy Cross and is a McDonald’s All-American Game nominee. Texas, Purdue, Texas State, SMU, Stephen F. Austin and UTEP have all offered Ogden scholarships, according to his recruiting profile on 247Sports.
