Longhorns remain in the race for the top recruit in Oklahoma.
Here is something you probably don’t hear to often. The Texas Longhorns were named one of five finalists for the number one rated player in the state of Oklahoma.
Yesterday, four-star Norman (OK) North wide receiver Mason James revealed that his recruitment is down to five programs and has set his commitment date for for next month on June 25th.

Some former Big 12 rivals plus Washington round out James’ finalist group, and he has set official visits to four of his five finalists (no date yet for Kansas State). With James being local in the city of Norman, the Sooners being in the mix is not surprising at all, but what is surprising is that the Longhorns seem to have a decent shot in this recruitment.

James made a trip to Austin to meet with Steve Sarkisian back in April, and that trip came on the heels of Texas extending an offer in March.

I can’t recall the last time that a player who hails from Norman, Oklahoma signed with Texas, but it looks like Sarkisian and Chris Jackson are in the mix and trying to make it happen. The Longhorns will host James for an official visit on June 13th before his makes his final visit to the hometown Sooners.
It will be interesting to see how things play out with this one. James had a very productive junior season where he recorded 56 catches for 1,233 yards and 17 touchdowns.
James is the 37th ranked wide receiver prospect in the country according to 247Sports composite rankings and he is the 229th ranked prospect overall.
