The Longhorns will reportedly move on from Terry after two seasons.
Wednesday’s 86-80 loss to the Xavier Musketeers in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament in Dayton by the Texas Longhorns ended a disappointing season with a 19-16 record under second-year head coach Rodney Terry.
As soon as the game ended, reports immediately emerged that athletics director Chris Del Conte will move on from Terry, who took Texas to the Elite Eight as the interim head coach in 2022-23 following the termination of Chris Beard. Over the last two seasons, however, the Horns experienced diminishing returns under Terry, losing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year before barely making the Big Dance and bowing out quickly this year.
After the loss to Xavier, Terry was asked to reflect on his tenure at Texas.
“I’ve been at Texas 13 years, and there’s not a year I haven’t made the NCAA Tournament or been a part of the NCAA Tournament. I have a lot of pride in terms of being a Longhorn. I love being at Texas. I don’t think anyone has been a part of Texas basketball that’s been more successful than myself. I’ve been a part of the top five seasons in this program’s history of this program,” Terry said.
“I give our guys a lot of credit for putting themselves in a great position to be here tonight. At the end of the day, it’s in God’s hands. At the end of the day, I live my life, I’m a believer, and if God has plans for me to be here, then I’ll be here. If He has plans for me to be somewhere else, He’s the one with the master plan at all times. That’s what I live my life by. I don’t live my life by no man. I live my life by God. I got strong faith.”
Now the question is when Del Conte will make a decision on Terry’s future with the Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bowls reporting that it could take some time.
Nothing is even close to imminent in the Texas basketball coaching situation.

Xavier head coach Sean Miller is reportedly one of the names under consideration by Del Conte, who doesn’t typically start coaching searches until he already has a replacement in place.
But is there a chance that Terry keeps his job?
Bohls isn’t ruling it out just yet.
If CDC can’t land an elite coach, Terry will have a slight chance to keep his job.
